Monitor App Service Health and Performance with Built-In Diagnostics
Configure Health Check, explore platform metrics, run App Service Diagnostics, and set up Auto Heal rules for an Azure web app.

Lab overview
Azure App Service includes a rich set of built-in monitoring and self-healing capabilities that operate at the platform level - independent of any application code or external monitoring agents. These features give Azure administrators direct visibility into instance health, request patterns, resource consumption, and error rates without requiring Application Insights instrumentation or custom logging. For production workloads, configuring Health Check ensures that the platform automatically detects unresponsive instances and routes traffic away from them, while Auto Heal rules provide automated mitigation for recurring issues like memory leaks, slow requests, or cascading HTTP errors.
In this lab, you will configure App Service Health Check to monitor instance availability, explore App Service-specific platform metrics in Azure Monitor Metrics Explorer, use the built-in Diagnose and Solve Problems blade to investigate web app behavior, and set up Auto Heal rules that automatically recycle worker processes based on configurable triggers.
Objectives
Upon completion of this intermediate level lab, you will be able to:
- Configure App Service Health Check with a custom health endpoint path and verify instance monitoring behavior
- Explore App Service platform metrics in Azure Monitor Metrics Explorer, including HTTP Server Errors, Response Time, Requests, and Memory Working Set
- Use the Diagnose and Solve Problems blade to navigate diagnostic categories and review risk assessments for a web app
- Configure Auto Heal rules with triggers based on request count, slow requests, and HTTP status codes to automatically recycle worker processes
Who is this lab for?
This lab is designed for Azure administrators preparing for the AZ-104 certification who need to understand App Service-specific operational monitoring features. Basic familiarity with the Azure portal and App Service concepts is recommended.
Verified against your live environment
An automated validation engine inspects your actual resources and configurations as you work. Completion means the task was performed, not multiple choice, real-world proficiency.
